Powerful Tools for Judaic Evaluation and Reaching Beyond the Translation
Rabbi Shimon Emlen
This session will explore several simple and effective methods of student evaluation. The focus will be on the struggles and challenges of teaching deep Judaic concepts in a foreign language and building learning and translation skills, while still reaching beyond basic understanding and translation. Teachers will learn how to effectively utilize voice recording homework for accountability and playback for accuracy, and “StudyStack” for vocabulary and quizzing for the whole class, and more. We will also discuss some of the challenges that we face with parent and student pushback, and address the question of using technology to accomplish new learning heights as opposed to using technology just for the sake of technology.
Rabbi Emlen has been a Jewish educator in Seattle for 5 years and currently serves as teacher and Development manager for MMSC Day School in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood. He is passionate about education as an “experience” and has worked in the classroom and running hands-on kids programs such as the “Shofar Factory” and the “Model Matzah Bakery”. He is originally from Seattle, having spent a 9-year detour in New York City, as well as Yeshivah abroad in Israel and Argentina.
